SKETCHES [FROM TASK 2] ✮♱

I asked my friends and family about which sketch interests them the
most and it was Sketch 1
in Fig. 6. Although some others (Fig. 4 and Fig. 5) are more visually
attractive, this pulled them in because they want to know the story behind the artwork.
I chose this sketch as it mainly has more narrative driven
elements than the chosen artwork in Fig. 2. I want to use the dynamic
and interesting design principles
from Fig. 2 to improve my own twist of a character driven illustration
that Yana Toboso, the artist, is known for.
VISUAL REFERENCES
I found more visual references as a mood board for my chosen sketch
in Fig. 6. I focused more on colours and aesthetic to improve the
environment of my artwork.

DRAWING PROCESS ⋆˙⟡
I converted the size and cleaned up the sketch, adding some
details.
I did the lineart for the characters and added colour to foreground
elements. I started in grayscale so I won't focus too much on colour
at this stage.
I referenced the clouds in Fig. 7. and coloured the sky. But it
looked off. I decided to redo it with lesser clouds after asking the
opinions of my friends. I also decided to colour block everything to
make sure the tones look good with each other. Sadly my old tablet
crashed so i lost the progress of the sky.
After redrawing the clouds with lesser detail and added
perspective. I realized the left side, which is darker is too empty.
So I added trees to increase depth.
After adjusting all the grayscale tones I converted everything to
colour.
Next, I shaded the main focus of the art, the mother and the
graves. To add texture, I did subtle hatching and uses particle
airbrush to make it look more like stone.
After that, I added grass using complementary colours (blue and
yellow to make it more dynamic and also to seperate the living and
dead side. I also blocked out the shadow and light of the bushes and
flowers.
Referencing Fig. 7 and 9, I rendered the plants. and added an edge
filter so it gives subtle outline to the plants, making it more
cohesive with the rest of the elements.
I then moved on to the fence, using blue and red to show contrast
and the concept of rusting metal.
Lastly, I added detail to the background, father and baby then
lowered down the opacity, adding motion blur to imitate them
dissipating. I also added subtle highlights to everything where
light hits. To top it off, I use tone curve to adjust the overall
hue so it looks more hamonized.

RATIONALE
In this artwork, I want to portray a woman grieving for her baby
and husband.
As both wife and mother I want to show her sadness and loneliness by
making her surrounded by only wildlife and the 2 graves. Blue
morning glories can represent loyalty, which symbolizes the
mother.
Her garment is all black, and
I made the environment
after the rain which is to mean
that after losing her family, she still
misses them and
embraces the husband even when
the rain is over. She stays close but unable to hug her child's
grave as a way to show guilt.
As
she felt like she did not fulfill her duty as a mother.
In the clouds, you can see the husband and child's silhouette, to
show it still
lingers in her mind. However
their faces are not visible as the woman is unable to move on but
scared to face them. It
references the grey clouds that dissipate from the sky after the
rain.
I enjoy subtle fantasy settings similar to Ghibli. So I made her look like a being from a fantasy world and made the
garden more magical yet dull to bring out her emotions. To make
things interesting, I let the cause of the death be more open ended
so it allows the viewers to interpret it themselves, just like my
chosen artwork in Fig.2, giving a
freedom of narrative.
PRINCIPLES
Emphasis was done on the mother, the main character by using the fences as
an arrow. I used the rules of thirds
to arrange my composition. The main focus on the left and the
viewers eyes leading to the right by taking advantage of the sky's
colour and movement of the clouds. I used contrast of light and dark
colours to separate the woman and her family to divide the living
and the dead. By dividing them, I also used the gestalt theory's principle of similarity. I also used analogous colours (blue, green, yellow, orange) and complementary colours
(blue/purple + orange/yellow)to show harmony. These colours are desaturated and represents the sadness and mourning of the woman.

IV. Reflection
Experience
This was a rollercoaster ride for me as there I kept
experiencing technical issues but I powered through at the
end, barely making it. I genuinely enjoyed analyzing my
favorite artist and making an artwork with my learnings.
Observations
I found out I tend to fuss over the same parts of an artwork
for a really long time. Which caused me to spend too much
time. I hope to improve more on things I don't usually draw,
like clouds and plants.
Findings
I found out that the more we look at something, the more we
learn about it. But we can't just stare at it. We have to
analyze it, which I found interesting and extremely helpful.
