1. LECTURES

Lec 01-04: Click Here

Lec 05: Perception & Organization

Perception is "the way in which something is regarded, understood or interpreted."

In Typo, it deals with the visual perception of the readers via contrast, form and organisation of the content.

Contrast

3. TASK 2

➤ Part A: Key Artwork

Research and Ideating
After a short briefing by Mr. Vinod. I started working on my mindmap, research and sketches.

I decided to go for dark fantasy + Joy + always return which is related to the meaning of my Chinese name and also my personal taste. I wanted to go for my artist handle but ultimately decided to go with my real name.

Fig2.1. Mindmap and brainstorming - 09.05.2025

After feedback, I was glad Mr. Vinod told us that one of my references "Mistlock" is called the Tuscan Serif. This way I can research even more now.

Since my concept is there but the balance is not. I decided to look for more references and did some sketches. This time I tried out squares, triangles and circles as a base.

Fig2.2. Moodboard - 09.05.2025

My name, 恺旋 (Kai Xuan),means "Joy" "revolve/return". It is a reference to the Chinese idiom 凯旋归来, which directly translates to return home triumphantly. 旋(xuan)alone directly translates as circle

So I decided to mix these meanings by connecting The letter "K" and "X" to mean that I will return with JOY. Sharp Edges represent Strength, which in my case to return triumphantly. Using a circle can further push these meanings as well.

Digitization

Fig2.5. First digitization 21.05.2025

After feedback, Mr Vinod instructed me to make completely new sketches in class. so I went back to sketching phase.

Fig2.6. In Class Sketches - 21.05.2025

Mr Vinod still said it was lacking something ad not balanced. At this point I was overwhelmed and out of ideas. Mr Vinod gave me a 2 day extension to digitize it so I took a long break and did it on the last day.

Fig2.7. Final Sketches - 30.05.2025

Finally, I decided to go backwards and start from the moodboard. I decided to focus on the meaning of my name and a specific aesthetic, Victory and Vintage. Mr Vinod suggested I use 1 and 3.

Colour Application

The main colour I chose is gold as it represents victory. Then I played around with some colours till it worked well.

Key Artwork Animation

After deciding on main designs, I started on the frame animation on Illustrator, then moved on to photoshop to arrange it into the timeline.

➤  Part B: Collateral

Unblast  https://unblast.com/

I chose a few mockups based on my mindmap. I wanted to focus more on the vintage aesthetic that gives the old school nostalgic vibe yet still gives a bang!

Fig3.1. Patterns - 01.06.2025

After downloading the mockups, I used adobe photoshop to edit my designs onto the mockups. I also did a few variations of my wordmark in adobe illsutrator.

Fig3.2. Notebook Mockup - 03.06.2025

First I went with something approachable, a tiny notebook with a plastic cover of my logo and a pattern that's revealed when you open the first page.

Fig3.3. Tote bag Mockup - 03.06.2025

Next, I chose a Tote bag with a dirty brown based on the darkest colour in my colour pallete paired with my wordmark. My design was already quite flashy so I didn't want to crowd the totebag.

Fig3.4. TV Mockup - 03.06.2025

Lastly, I chose a tv mockup. It is to reflect my interest in animation and the keyword victory. I did a repeating pattern on the TV like its a vintage ad for a vigilante TV show.

Fig3.5. Portrait and Logo - 03.06.2025

Next is the portrait, I unsaturated the image and lowered the levels. I then added my wordmark and some patterns. I went for a more simpler look, then added noise grain to stay in theme.

Fig3.6. Insta Grids First Draft - 03.06.2025

Mr. Vinod said to explore more on the patterns to make it more interesting.

I played around with the X and also the repeating patterns to form an interesting visual.

After Feedback I changed the TV ad to a signboard and changed the top middle post to my animation.

4. FEEDBACK

➤ Week 5:

General Feedback: Mr.Vinod gave feedback to everyone. Reminded us to focus on only black for now and do no use literal meanings of objects as our design.

Specific Feedback:
The concept is there, but I was reccomended to explore more styles and to balance my composition.

➤ Week 6:
General Feedback: Feedbacks were given to everyone in class.

Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod Reccomended me to restart from scratch so that I stop staying in the same mindset.

➤ Week 7:

General Feedback: Feedbacks were given to everyone in class.

Specific Feedback:  Explore more patterns and interesting shapes from my wordmark design.

➤ Week 8:

General Feedback: Complete Task 2.

Specific Feedback:  The TV does not look like a collateral. The TV does not look like a collateral. Animation good to go.

5. REFLECTION

Experience
This project we were tasked with designing a wordmark design which was my first time not being able to rely on just images. Not only that, it was an experience to learn about ourselves too.

Observations
I realized being complicated is hard, being simple is hard too. With how subjective designs are, being able to convinced people that your designs are good. Wordmark design needs alot of exploration and thinking to make it come to life.

Findings
I found out that I have bias towards certain designs and style but it doesn't mean I should abandon it just to go out of my box. I also learn that exploration is important and we cannot just be confined to our first our second design but to go further.

6. FURTHER READING

Typographic Systems by Kimberly Elam

Fig. 5.1. Typographic Systems by Kimberly Elam (2007), Week 7

During Week 7, I read further on this book. The axial system is easily understood and helps the designer develop a keen awareness of grouping, word space, letter space, leading, and composition.

Initial Phase

Fig. 5.2. Axial System by Kimberly Elam (2007), Week 7

✦ Understanding the axial system and organizing the message with line space and line breaks should be the initial focus.

Intermediate Phase

Fig. 5.3. Axial System by Kimberly Elam (2007), Week 7

✦ Once the designer has an understanding of the axial system, experimentation begins with word spacing, letter spacing, and leading. Negative space becomes important, as does the texture of the text.

Advanced Phase

Fig. 5.4. Axial System by Kimberly Elam (2007), Week 7

✦ Later, designers experiment with shaped axes, unusual alignments, and unconventional line breaks. The rigid vertical axis can be shaped into a zigzag pattern or placed near an edge. Text can be clustered into a single position or column.
