Experience

While working on the tasks in this module, I was able to learn and develop skills like critical thinking and analyzing. The first task, proposal, was already challenging. Despite being allowed to choose a topic we enjoy, it took a lot of thinking just to choose a research topic. Creating research problems and objectives were also mentally challenging. On the second task, doing critical reviews were extremely helpful to see research on topics similar to my interest and see their point of view of how they reach their conclusion. But due to the niche topic I chose, searching for suitable literature was difficult. For the third task, I enjoyed analyzing the shows and their characteristics. Although I had to change one of the shows to a shorter alternative due to time constraints. I started too late on watching and analyzing the shows so a lot of parts had to be compromised. However, I am still glad I was able to reach a conclusion with the analysis I have done over the weeks.

Observation
With a niche topic that is very much my interest, I found out that feedback from others is really important.  Getting weekly feedbacks from Mr. Asrizal was helpful in getting a different perspective. I also listened to other classmates’ feedback during tutorials. I was able to gain many insights. The opinions from friends and family also helped with making my research reader friendly. I learned to improve my communication skills and how to present my work. I also observed that different individuals have their own way of conducting research. As both Dr. Jinchi and Mr. Asrizal mentioned, the methodology we choose depends on the objective of your research. There was never a fixed format and we have the creative liberty to decide how to conduct our own research. For me, it was content analysis. I found out through a module, Contextual Studies back in Foundation of Design, analyzing media I enjoy is something I am good at. It was also suitable for my topic.

Findings

This module was eye opening for me as my first research paper. Critical reviews turned out to be extremely helpful, especially to someone new to research like myself. I was motivated after reading the research of others with the same interests. The main impact I had was from Task 3. Since I chose content analysis, I had to really pay attention to every second of the shows I was watching and observe them. By doing this, I found many new things every time I rewatched. I also grew my respect for the creators of these shows because of the special details, amazing animations and even underlying meanings in both visual and story context. It showed me a new light on the dark fantasy genre as I was watching 2 of the shows for the first time. I’m glad I chose a diverse sub-genres of dark fantasy instead of sticking to just one. The diversity and conclusion I got from my data gathering and content analysis revealed so much new knowledge that not only helped with my research objectives but also as a person who is interested in this field. At first, hearing the word research made me assume it would be a burden as someone who is a visual learner. Yet, going through this module showed me research isn’ t just about reading literature or staring at text.
