Removing background of taken photo

Added a colour fill layer, noise and gaussian blur.

Attempt 1 with threshold adjustment layer.

Attempt 2: Threshold, film grain, adjustments (curves, levels, contrast) added the box behind so it seems like I'm climbing out for hope.

Feedback

Mr. Fauzi suggested to to take pictures of objects we own as much as we can instead of using google images.

After that, I took photos of an old book I had. By doing it under bright light and blank wall. I was able to take a photo similar to my draft. I also had a fan at the side to make the pages flip by itself.

I then took pictures of multiple pages of the book with the help of my cat holding it down. I will later use this on repeat for the flying pages on my poster.

I removed the background, added find edge filter and smart sharpen to the book.

I then moved to illustrator to add in the pages. I drafted the positions and used the envelope distort tool with mesh. Pages were given the same effect as the book.

I used the pen tool to add in the feathers. Gave gradient and outer glow for the magical vibe of "hope". Pages were added vignette to give more focus to the subject.

I added film grain to everything and find edge filter to the pages. I also used multiply to let the words show faintly in the background.

I then add in the text I prepared in Illustrator.

Lastly, I added noise filter to the whole thing to make the image look more consistent and aesthetically pleasing.

Final Outcome:

"HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS"

Hope is just like a bird, always with us, singing hope to us. In this story we call life, the feathers and pages flowing out will remind us that we can write our own stories and make it through the harshest of storms, just like a bird.

I made the word hope the brightest in the dark surrounding, which allowed the contrast to show us hope. The pages and feathers flies out of the book rhythmically like a music score, signifying that singing bird and the story we will write by ourselves, never confined to a fixed narrative in a printed book. I used pictures of a real book and pages to make it seem more close to home.

The film grain gives a nostalgic and hopeful feeling imitating newspapers or book pages. The obscured face and bright lighting on the main subject is a reference to low quality angel sighting photos, another symbolism of hope.

REFLECTION

This assignment was challenging and although it took a long time to get past the draft phase, I'm proud of the final outcome. Being able to use so many skills learnt from different assignments and lectures was very helpful and made me feel like I definitely learned a lot throughout the semester. Using the knowledge and skills I learnt while working on this poster, I hope to improve more as well.
