Week 10

Stop Motion trial shoot

This week, we were instructed to do a trial shoot for stop motion using a pre established storyline. We made the models in the photo studio and split into 2 groups to work on it. We also got to experienced using both camera and phone to film.

I was in a group with 2 other people, Me and Irdhina made the puppets while Yeng San sets up and install both phone and camera.

Week 10 Setting up

We then started with camera first while the other group used the phone. We had technical issues during our first try. majority of the photos taken by camera were over exposed even though the preview was fine.

We quickly moved on to phone first then film a 2nd time on camera. I found out we were able to complete it faster after 2 tries.

Week 10 Shooting with Camera

During the first 2 rounds, I was in charge of moving the puppets while Irdhina clicked the shutter. Then, Irdhina switched to moving puppets on the 3rd round while Yeng San operated the camera.

Week 10 Moving the puppets

After filming, Yeng San sent us all the images and videos. We individually editted it using After Effects with Mr Martin's instructions.

We imported the jpeg as image sequence then used time stretch to adjust the timing. I used freeze frame to pause some scenes that needed time. I also added fade with the opacity keyframes.

Planning and Proposal

Week 10: Before beginning the filming process, we were told to create a draft proposal with a working title based on the tarot card we got during Week 9.

My card was Justice. I thought for a long while but while listening to music, I was inspired by "God Games", a song from a concept album, "Epic the musical".

The story of the odyssey was so fitting. And in "God Games", it was a snippet of Athena, the goddess of wisdom/war debating while fighting with Ares the God of war/courage. 2 similar yet different gods debated on whether they should release a human who was imprisoned by their father. Whether they oppose or not, it was their own sense of justice.

Week 10 Proposal

Week 11: After consulting with Mr. Martin, my idea was approved. I went with a recreation of how I imagined the musical would play out in the form of stop motion.

I started planning for my filming and bought materials I did not have. I also gathered more references on silhouette animation.

I also completed my storyboard.

Shooting

Week 12: I started with test filming with the first 2 seconds. I laid the black clay flat on a light board and used a stand to place my phone above for filming.

I used a Stop Motion Studio from Play Store for shoot. After showing my trial shoot to Mr. Martin, I was told to continue my work.

Week 12 Trial Shooting

Week 13: I setup everything in the corner of my room and film in it, since I'll have consistent lighting if I close my blackout curtains. I then started filming according to my storyboard.

Week 13 Shooting

After a few shots I realized that using clay is versatile but takes up too much time. I spent one whole day working non stop just to do less than 5 seconds of work. Due to time constraints I decided to use paper puppets as substitutes for the characters when they body does not change angles too much.

Editing

Alot of the scenes were shot out of the prepared canvas due to area constraints and my tripod not being flexible enough.

That's why I cropped all the videos to the needed areas, including the fight scenes that had to be filmed separately.

Week 13 Raw Footage Compilation in Phone

Afterwards, I used the built in tools in my phone gallery to increase contrast, exposure and decrease saturation. This is to eliminate he dotted background lightboard and to make the silhouettes pop out more.

Week 13 First Edited Footage Compilation in Phone

After effects crashed really badly on my laptop and even blue screened :(

I moved to a software on my phone "alight motion" to stitch all the scenes together. I also used chroma key to delete the background, and put the 2 characters together on the same scene.

Week 13 Editing Progress on Alight Motion 1

Lastly, I added motion blur to enhance the action before exporting.

Next is adding the special effects, especially the action lines during the fight scene. I did all these in Flipaclip by drawing frame by frame following the choppy style in the stop motion so it looks more seamless.

Week 13 Adding Special Effects in Flipaclip 1

I decided to add an impact frame by inverting the colours on a few frames as well. The frames on my action scenes were not as strong as I expected so I tried to enhance it more.

Week 13 Adding Special Effects in Flipaclip 2

For the final step, I exported everything to Premiere and did some colour correction. I wanted to go for the more vintage/retro look and emulate puppet shows. I added noise, Vignettes and dark edges.

Week 14: For final consultation, Mr. Martin suggested I removed an unnecessary close up scene and delay the entrance of Aphrodite to reduce confusion.

I also decided to add subtitles so that the animation is easier to follow for viewers who don't know "Epic the Musical".
