Task 3: Illustrated Typography Poster

INSTRUCTIONS

Student are required to create a poster design composition using elements of photography, typography and vector graphics.

Photography is from DPI.

Typography and vector graphics is from IVN.

Theme: Quote of the Day

WEEK 7:

Research

Moodboard:

All references taken from Pinterest

Quote Choices:

All references taken from Pinterest

Chosen Quote:
"We’re all bad in someone’s story."

Summary of design concept:

The quote may sound negative at first, but I personally I find it comforting. I used to be very aware and afraid about whether someone dislikes me, or why someone hates me. So a loved one used to tell me this a lot, that wherever you go, there will always be someone isn’t fond of you.

With this poster, I want to portray a calm yet memorable design using the red, black, and white colour palette. I want to focus on making “me” seem like the bad guy to the viewers. So in this case, i will be the viewer’s bad guy. While I will also show the fact that I am content with them thinking of me as the bad guy. In conclusion, my design will portray that no matter how good we think we are, we’re all still bad in someone’s story.

WEEK 8:

Ideation

Thumbnailing

I started with drawing small thumbnails or rough ideas I had on my sketchbook and also coloured the parts that I wanted to be red. This gave me a clearer idea on which layout is better.

Drafting

Chosen sketch and Digitalized Sketch

Next, I chose my favorite sketch and digitalized it for the more detailed draft of the layout. As well as add colours for the overall view. I used my mood board above as main reference for colour, style, texture and layout. I also drafted a post and feel I want to get from the photograph I will take afterwards.

Feedback (Week 8)

I have misunderstood the instructions of this task and was advised to focus more on typographic aspects.

Re-ideation

Type layout inspirations taken from Pinterest.

Taking my previous ideas into account, I really want to go for the newspaper, story, and papers. And still go for the same palette. This time, I will try out 2 different quotes for more options

WEEK 9:

Revision

There were concerns from Mr. Fauzi (DPI) of my quote being too depressing and against mental health issue policy of Taylor's University. So I decided to revise again.

I had trouble deciding on another one, but as I discussed with my friends, one of them, Belinda, suggested I use song titles or our favorite songs from the videogame, Honkai: Star Rail. I was then inspired and found one that was interesting to me and matches well with the drafts and ideas I already had.

Final Revised Quote:
"Hope" is the thing with feathers.

This is a quote taken from the poem, "Hope is the thing with feathers." by Emily Dickinson, which compares hope to a bird. I first heard it from the song with the same name by Robin/Chevy. It was a motivational and hopeful song, just like the poem. The message of this is that hope lives inside all of us. It can encourage us no matter what trials and tribulations we experience.

Sketching

Rough layout out text positioning and ideas

Sketch of type expression

For my quote I want to focus more on the word hope and feathers. To make the idea of feathers symbolising hope, I added these elements to the word hope and also added the sun, and olive leaves. The dove is universally known as a bird of hope, which is why I added the olive leaves, a plant that the dove from Noah's Arc brings back to prove there is life ashore.

WEEK 10:

Progress "Hope"

1. I searched for sans serif fonts that best match my sketch and found 3. Oration, Baneta and Necto_mono. Baneta was found to be the closest, but I converted the text to shape and made them wider so the "O" could look more round.

2. I added 3D and bevel extrude to make it pop. I also added the wings as shown in my sketch.

3. A lot of my references had texture so I added outer glow, diffuse glow and film grain for a more interesting appearance.

4. For the sun rays on "O", I used the rectangle tool to make one rod and used the repeat object to make a circle with it. I then converted to compound path and applied radial gradient for the shining effect.

5. Lastly, I also added film grain and diffuse glow to match the text design.

6. I used the font, Oration to type out the subtext. I kept it simple soit won't outshine the main type expression.

Progress "Feather"

1. I used the pen tool to make the feather shape by tracing my sketch. Then used the font, Baneto to type out the word feather.

2. I useds envelope distort, make with mesh, to warp the word with the feather. I also added gradient and outer glow to the feather to make it more interesting. The feather will also pop out more in the dark background.

3. Using what I learned in tutorials, I made the pages at the back using pen tool and envelope distorting pictures of the book's pages.

Rendering

I put together all the elements from DPI (<-- click for progress) and IVN then added a vignette behind the text. Lastly, I added film grain to make the whole poster cohesive and matching the style I was inspired from my references.

FINAL OUTCOME

Final submission of Poster, "Hope is the Thing with Feathers" (28.11.2024)

Hope is just like a bird, always with us, singing hope to us. In this story we call life, the feathers and pages flowing out will remind us that we can write our own stories and make it through the harshest of storms, just like a bird.

I made the word hope the brightest in the dark surrounding, which allowed the contrast and glow to show us hope. I gave wings and sun rays to it as they’re symbolisms of hope. The color gold gives hope as well. Giving it bevel allowed me to show the shining light from “hope” even better. The word feather was done with an envelope distort on the feather flowing out of the book to show it’s literal meaning

REFLECTION

This assignment was challenging and although it took a long time to get past the draft phase, I'm proud of the final outcome. Being able to use so many skills learnt from different assignments and lectures was very helpful and made me feel like I definitely learned a lot throughout the semester. Using the knowledge and skills I learnt while working on this poster, I hope to improve more as well.
