ANIMATED INFOGRAPHIC VIDEO

For our final project, we were tasked to create an animated video based on one of our infographic poster in Project 1. We decided to go for my partner, Lim Yeng San's Cannoli recipe poster.

Since Yeng San had already chosen to do lineless style, we went with the same for the video so that we can reuse her assets.

These are the references and Yeng San proceeded to make the storyboard. While she made the storyboard, we discussed on how to improve it together.

Next, I made a time map of the storyboard so that we can better visualize the time.

After that, I started working on the animatic while Yeng San works on the assets. I used Flipaclip to create it.

We received feedback that it was too fast with no pauses and that we should add indicators of which part is for pastry and which is for cream. I quickly made the changes afterwards.

With the finalized draft, we started working on the video. I worked on the Pastry part while Yeng San did the Cream Part.

I placed the animatic on low opacity and animated on it with the illustrations Yeng San Prepared.

For the dough, I use puppet tool and scale to manipulate it. So it changes shape whenever something is done to it.

Our tutorial is quite lengthy, so to save time, we used transitions that reuses assets, camera wipes to next step, or camera following the ingredient. I also added motion blur and editted the dough after feedback.

The dough wrapping on bamboo animation is arguably the hardest for me. I had to create multiple shapes front, middle and back, then manipulate it with scale, position and puppet tool to imitate the action of wrapping.

Something I had fun with was animating the boiling bubbles, it was simple and fun to create it. I made it in a seperate composition and added it to the pots afterwards.

I did some research on how to use expressions in after effects and used it to wiggle the cannolis while theyre frying.

With that, I completed my part of the animation.

After Yeng San also completed her part, I combined the 2 in after effects to create the transitioning. I also changed the colour of pastry part to create a clearer difference in steps.

Lastly, I added audio and SFX in Audition using audio from freesound.org and some recorded SFX I had from Sonic Design assignments.

FEEDBACK.

Week 6
The video cannot be more than 1 minute, try your best to stay in the limit.

Week 7
Animatic too fast now, should pause at certain parts and establish the first and second part.

Week 8
Add motion blur, make the dough thinner after it went through the machine the second time.

REFLECTION.

This project allowed me to be very experimental with the animtion. I rarely do lineless animation as it is a different style from my usual. I had fun exploring the different tools in After Effects and experimenting animations I have never done before. Overall, I was able to learn many new things through this experience and I'm happy with the final result.

Small regret would be that I never managed to find out why certain illustrations are low resolution despite being vectors straight from Adobe Illustrator. Hopefully we can find a fix to this issue in a future project if time permits.
